Data: Field points

Field points are the locations at which sea state RAOs are generated, i.e. results for the fluid pressure and velocity. The locations of field points are specified in the global coordinates $\GXYZ$.

The sea state RAO results generated at a field point are not valid if the point is inside a body or on a body surface:

In addition, field points should not be too close to a body surface. Results may be unreliable if the distance from a body surface is less than a typical panel diameter.

Notes: A field point on an edge (or vertex) of a body panel will cause an error. You can check for this situation by selecting validation of panel arrangement.
Similar restrictions apply in the presence of a damping lid or dipole panels.

Detecting field points inside bodies

If you select the option to detect and skip field points inside bodies, OrcaWave will not compute sea state RAO results at any points found to be inside a body or on a body surface. A placeholder result will be returned for such points instead. We recommend using this option in most situations – it reduces the possibility of a subsequent analysis inadvertently using a meaningless result.

If you do not select this option, results will be computed at all points using the sea state RAO formulae. Results for any points inside a body, or on a body surface, are meaningless and should not be used in subsequent analysis.
